Ever think of installing Microsoft Windows OS over Apple Macbook. How exciting it would be if you could enjoy both operating systems on the same laptop. Here we are explaining how you can install Windows on Macbook using Bootcamp. Bootcamp is a utility provided by Apple to support the installation of Windows with your current MacOS.

Most of the Apple users don’t switch over to Windows but might be due to software compatibility or challenges in switching, you might require installing Windows on Macbook. Bootcamp is a utility provided by Apple to support the installation of Windows with your current MacOS. Bootcamp provides an environment to support hardware and driver related dependency to successful run Windows on Macbook.

REQUIREMENTS

1. Windows Operating system Disc image. Download ISO file or you can convert disc to image with a valid license. Make sure your image is bug-free and no files missed during conversion. A lot of tools available to create ISO from disc.

2. Two USB Pendrives (prefer USB 3.0) or an external HDD with a memory size of more than 4 GB.

3. You need access to the internet to download Bootcamp support files from https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1720?locale=en_US

4. Free space on your Macbook HDD as per your requirement for Windows working environment.

Steps involved to install Windows on Macbook using Bootcamp

1. First of all copy ISO image of your Windows disc to Macbook.

2. Insert USB Pendrive and launch Boot Camp Assistant from Utilities.

3. Now choose ‘Create a Windows 7 or later version install disk’.

4. Now, choose your ISO image and verify destination disk. This will transfer installation files to USB drive and make it bootable.

5. Now you need to download ‘Latest support software for Windows’. It will download essential hardware support files for LAN, display,wifi and other devices, you need to download over an external storage device as after windows installation you won’t be able to access internet without installing these basic hardware support files. 6. After finishing this step, relaunch ‘Bootcamp Assistant’ and select ‘Install Windows 7 or later version’. Now you have to create a partition for Windows, this will be space for Windows OS usage. Just drag the slider and set your desired size or divide equally.

7. Now you are ready to proceed with Windows installation further, laptop will restart and launch Windows setup and choose ‘Custom Installation’, in our case we installed Windows 7. Select ‘BOOTCAMP’ partition and format it. Windows setup will copy and install files. Just configure your Windows with username and credentials.

8. Install  ‘Latest support software for Windows’ from your USB storage device which you have downloaded earlier or you can download and install same from another PC. This will ensure all your Macbook hardware is working properly over Windows.

9. To switch between MacOS and Windows, just Hold down the Option key until you see the Startup Manager while you power on. You will be presented with two boot disks, one is MacOS and another one Windows, just select your desired OS. You can also switch from Windows to MacOS just click on ‘Bootcamp’ icon in notification area and select ‘Restart to MacOS’.

    1. Switch on your Macbook, instantly keep pressing Command key + R key.
    2. This will make you enter into MacOS Recovery environment.
    3. Release both keys when you see ‘Apple logo or Globe’
    4. Later it will ask for network connectivity, choose from available Wifi networks.
    5. Let it verify and download required OS files from Apple source.
    6. It might take some time depending on your internet speed, let it complete.
    7. After completion, just restart and reconfigure your Macbook. Kindly note, this will wipe our your all data and you will be presented with a fresh OS.

What happens, if you don’t see startup disk

Your startup disk might needs directory repair if you don’t see startup disk. Kindly follow below steps.

  1. From the macOS Utilities window, Open Disk Utility .
  2. Select your startup disk from Disk Utility Window.
  3. Select First Aid tab and click Repair disk option.
  4. This will verify and repair any issues with your startup disk, same option CHKDSK as you run in Microsoft Windows.
  5. Quit Disk Utility after your disk repair is completed.
